Code of Conduct

Contact your U.S. Representative and Senators to urge their support for a Space Code of Conduct.

Although an international treaty to prevent the deliberate creation of space debris is not in the offing, there is growing support for a code of conduct that would take the form of political compacts or executive agreements among space-faring nations.

The pacts would not be legally binding, but they would encourage future cooperation by establishing “rules of the road” and encouraging responsible behavior in space. A similar approach proved effective in the case of civil air traffic, leading to the creation of the International Civil Aviation Authority in 1947.

Visit the Stimson Center’s website and read a proposed Space Code of Conduct (click here). Send copies of the Space Code to your U.S. Senators and Representative.  Follow with telephone calls to staff members to urge support. Write a letter to your local newspaper.
