Over 100 earth imaging satellites must pass through the orbital planes of debris (indicated in red) created by China's ASAT Test in 2007.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) leads the national effort to oppose the weaponization of outer space. UCS successfully educated policy makers about how a "test bed" for space weapons could lead to a new arms race in space and convinced Congress to deny funding for the program. It continues to inform policy makers, military officers, the media, and public about China's space program.
